Herpes Virus Family Facts
To most people the word herpes conjures up an image of genital herpes, the incurable virus that is transmitted through sexual contact and causes blisters on the genitals. However herpes is in fact a family of viruses that is extremely widespread and can ca

Modern medical science has made astounding leaps and bounds in our knowledge of the functioning of the human body, as well as how bacteria, phages, and other elements deleterious to humans operate upon us. However, as medical science has only been truly scientific for less than two hundred years, it holds it limitations. This is true not only for an incomplete understanding of diseases like cancer, but also for one of the greatest foes of medicine, the virus. One of the most common and potentially destructive viruses is herpes.

Regrettably, at this time there is no known herpes cure, on the whole. Some doctors insist that if treated within 3 days to a week, the virus can sometimes be defeated to the extent that symptoms will not manifest themselves throughout the life of the person affected, though it is rare for a person to seek treatment in time, and the virus will remain in the body indefinitely.

What doctors have been able to do, however, is circumvent the disease from manifesting its symptoms on a regular condition, or when they do occur, of stymieing these symptoms as much as possible. These symptoms include redness, itching, bumps, sores, dry cracking, bleeding, aches, pains, and vaginal or penile discharge.

The two means by which the symptoms are kept at bay are through orally-induced medicines and topical means -salves directly applied to the condition. Generally these medicines are taken or applied 1 to 2 times daily, for optimal herpes cure, with a reduction in the symptoms within 3 days.

Notably, many outbreaks, especially in younger, healthier people, are mild and need not be medicated. However, at the other extreme are those who suffer from the indications of herpes on a nearly daily basis. In this case suppression therapy is the key. This simply implies a more regular, even stringent use of medicines available on the market, and has proven much more favorable than sporadic treatment. Again, though not a complete herpes cure, they help greatly.

The most common of these partial herpes cure medicines is acyclovir, which has been a standard succor to people exhibiting signs of herpes. Two up-and-coming medicines are famciclovir and valacyclovir, all of which are in high repute with doctors seeking a herpes cure. These drugs have shown an overall symptom repression rate of nearly 80% with 30% of patients exhibiting absolutely no recurrence of signs.

At times this treatment will not prevent the tell-tale signs of herpes infection. However, even when this is so, the symptoms are generally milder and the healing time from rashes, sores, etcetera, are heightened sharply. To know which of these medicines is best for an individual is best discerned by a doctor after thorough physical examination and history background check, and should not simply be guessed at by the patient.

A second form of 'treatment' is prevention -that is, for one's sexual partner(s). Sex partners should be informed of the risk before copulation and even then prophylactics and other means of covering the diseased genitalia should be found. Even then, coitus should be avoided at all times of outbreak. It is through prevention and thus elimination of spreading the disease that herpes cure is best facilitated.
